In-vitro fertilization (IVF)

In-vitro fertilization (IVF)

In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) used to treat infertility that has failed to respond to other medical or surgical interventions. This is a form of infertility treatment in which an egg is surgically removed from the ovary and fertilized outside the body. Depending on the quality of the semen, the fertilization is done either with the help of a conventional IVF method or with the help of an Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

Success Rates

One of the main factors influencing the outcome of IVF treatment is the age of the woman whose eggs are used. This is so because the quality of the eggs decline as the woman gets older. The rate of birth defects, chromosome abnormalities and miscarriages also rises with maternal age.

The procedure has an average success rate of 30-35%. This rate is affected by the woman’s age at the time of treatment and upon their particular fertility problem.

Treatment of Recurrent IVF Failures To experience a negative result after undergoing an IVF cycle is disappointing. In cases of recurrent IVF failure this can particularly be a distressing experience.

At the Mediheal Hospital clinic we can assist in investigating and treating the likely causes of repeated and unsuccessful assisted conception treatment.

Who might benefit?

  • Women with damaged or blocked fallopian tubes, or structural defects (congenital abnormalities) of the uterus
  • When ovaries do not respond to infertility medications
  • For women with Luteinized un-ruptured follicles
  • When male partner has low sperm count or poor sperm motility or poor survival rate
  • Immunological factors
  • The woman has significant endometriosis leading to infertility
  • The infertility is “unexplained”
  • ICSI is also beneficial where abnormal oocytes are retrieved which may not allow sperm to penetrate the zona pellucida
  • Couples who have history of suboptimal fertilization rates with conventional IVF

IVF Procedure

  • Development of the ovarian follicle
  • Egg Retrieval
  • Semen Collection
  • What happens in the IVF Lab
  • The embryo transfer
  • After transfer care
We offer various tests aimed to identify the cause of implantation failure. These tests can be broadly grouped into four categories:
  • Immune testing
  • Infection screening
  • Assessment of Uterine Cavity
  • Karyotyping

Based on the results of these tests, we can offer the supportive treatment pertinent to each individual with a view to help you conceive successfully.
